Governors

Hello, and welcome to our Governors' Section.

All UK schools have a Governing Body established in law as a Corporate Body. St Richard's is a Catholic Primary School in the Diocese of Arundel & Brighton and the majority of our governors are appointed by the Bishop. All governors are volunteers who meet at least once a term to oversee the running of the school and help the Headteacher in keeping the school as successful as it can be. The Governing Body set aims and objectives, agree targets and monitor them, agree budgets and review all school policies, and are also responsible for  appointing the Headteacher and the Deputy Head. Governors can sometimes bring skills and experience from their workplace, such as building or financial, or can offer an alternative opinion on any area of running the school.

The Governing Body's role is similar to a ‘critical friend’ who will challenge the school's management team on issues of performance and effectiveness but will leave the day-to-day running of the school to our highly qualified and experienced Headteacher and Senior Management Team.

In all Voluntary Aided Church Schools, such as ours, 10% of all school building costs needs to be found and raised by us. It is for this reason that the Governing Body organises events and campaigns to raise the funds not provided in the budget e.g.  our Penny Mile Challenge and Race Night.

Parents are welcome to contact us if they have any queries.

Governors Roles and Responsibilities

Barry Mockett - Chair

I was appointed by Bishop Richard Moth as a Foundation Governor at the school in 2018.

With two children at this school I joined the team to try and give back as much to the school as it gives my family.

I was lucky enough to be involved in the process to find the replacement head when Mrs Hunn retired and feel that in Mr Field we have found an excellent head.

St Richard's gives our whole school community an impressive start in their academic life and hope that through some small efforts we as a governor team can help the School Staff and your children to achieve great things.

For fun I am the Cub Leader at 8th Chichester Scout group where I also like to help young people throughout the Chichester district get the most they can out of scouting.

James Turner - Vice Chair - Foundation Governor

James Turner

Foundation Governor

I was a pupil at St. Richard’s from 2000 until 2007. Since leaving the leaving school, I studied at St. Philip Howard, before reading law at university. I am a solicitor at a local firm of solicitors, having qualified in March 2020.

In addition to my role as a governor, I have been a Catechist for the parish’s Confirmation Programme since September 2017, and I help run the Altar Servers’ Group, which hosts social events and training for the altar servers of the parish.

My specific roles within the governing body are reviewing the Catholic life of the school, how the school spends its Pupil Premium Grant money and the school’s finances in general, and the support the school provides pupils with special educational needs. To me, these are the essence of St. Richard’s: providing a Catholic education that allows every child to flourish and meet their potential.

Revd Jon Harman - Foundation Governor

I am a Foundation Governor, having been part of the Chichester parish for over 20 years. My two youngest children went to St Richard's school and on to St Philip Howard and so I have experience as a parent of what it means to hasve children learning in a Catholic educational setting.

I am part of the Parish Clergy Team as the Deacon in the Parish and my particular focus as a Governor is the Catholic life of the school and how the partnership between Parish, School, Nursery and Family is nurtured and encouraged.

I work full-time for the Diocese of Arundel and Brighton, as Formation and Spirituality Adviser, which involves working with Parishes, Deaneries, Clergy and Lay to plan and deliver programmes to build God's Kingdom in our communities.

Helen Loftus - Foundation Governor

I am delighted to be a Foundation Governor at St Richard’s. I have been in the parish for 19 years and been actively involved with the Confirmation group and other parish activities. I studied Modern Languages at University and spent some time teaching English abroad before re locating to Chichester and training as an English teacher. I taught English and Spanish for many years before moving into my current leadership and management role.

Liz Hogan - Staff Governor

Lisa Wallis - Foundation Governor

I took up the post of Foundation Governor in 2018.
I am a Legal Director at a large regional law firm on the south coast and specialise in advising businesses (including schools) in all aspects of employment law.
I am married to Paul and we have two children; Grace who is currently in year 2 at the school and Elliott who will hopefully join the school in 2022. We live in central Chichester and attend St Richard's church.
In my role as Governor I hope to use my knowledge and skills to act as a positive source of support, encouragement and, where appropriate, challenge to the school and its stakeholders.

Susannah Elvy - Parent Governor

I have been a parent Governor at St Richard's for 4 years. I have one son in Year 5 and one at St Philip Howard.

I became Safeguarding Governor two years ago and work closely with the governing body and Mr Field to ensure all the statutory requirements are met. My 'paid' job is as a Nurse Specialist in the NHS.

Rebecca Bird - Parent Governor

As a former pupil of St Richard’s Primary School and a Year 5 teacher in a local primary school, I was delighted to be appointed parent governor in October 2019.  I am married to James and we have two children in school: Joshua in Year 5 and Henry in Year 2.  I am on the finance committee and am the Sports Premium Link Governor.

Tim Boon - Foundation Governor

I have been a Foundation Governor since 2020.  I am married to Kathryn and we have three daughters, one in Year 1, another in St Richards Nursery & another who is 9 months old.  I am an IT manager at a global e-recruitment business and wanted to become a Governor to give something back to the school and our community.  Outside of work I enjoy spending time with my family, sailing and surfing.

Lisa Page-Berelian - Foundation Governor

In 2015 I became a Parent Governor of St Richard’s Catholic Primary School and am now a Foundation Governor. I feel privileged to be able to make a positive contribution to the future development and success of the school.

I am passionate about all children receiving a good education and appreciate the importance of effective school governance and the balance between challenge and support. I have a good understanding of the education system and I am well aware of the many challenges of school leadership and those that classroom teachers face.

To date in my role as governor, I have played a key part in raising standards through setting strategic direction, ensuring accountability, and monitoring and evaluating school performance data. In the last academic year, I have met and reported to inspectors for the Diocese of Arundel and Brighton Section 48 RE Report, for which the school gained outstanding in all categories. I am on the school admissions committee and annually review the admissions policy and assess school applications for each new reception intake. I met with Ofsted inspectors during the most recent inspection and have had review meetings with the Local Authority Adviser. I have recently attended safeguarding training.

I am a parishioner of Our Lady of the Assumption, Bosham.

Mike Beal - Associate Member

I am Mike Beal and I am proud to be the Chair of the Governors.  My connection with the school goes back to the 1980s when my daughter attended St Richard’s.  I am now retired but spent all my working career in education both as a secondary teacher specialising in Design and Technology and as Head of Year as well as five years in the advisory service.  I am a parishioner of St Richard’s here in Chichester.  My secondary education was at Dover Grammar School for Boys, I spent my formative years in Sandwich in Kent.  I am passionate about primary education and believe that every child, especially yours, should have the best that it is possible to have.  A good primary foundation is, without doubt, vital to a well-rounded individual who can give the best to the world we live in whilst achieving their highest potential.  Although I am nominally the leader of the Governors, I am proud to be a member of a group of individuals who share my passion and belief in the importance of education and the Catholic ethos we stand by.  I am grateful to each and every one of the team.

Anushka Goonetilleke - Clerk to Governors
