Geography at St Richard’s Catholic Primary School

At St Richard’s Catholic Primary School, we aim to inspire pupils with a curiosity and fascination about the world and its people. Our geography curriculum helps children develop a strong understanding of their local area, the United Kingdom and the wider world, whilst encouraging them to appreciate the diversity of environments, cultures and communities.

Our curriculum is carefully planned to ensure full coverage of the National Curriculum for Geography. Through the study of both physical and human geography, pupils develop a secure knowledge of places, landscapes, environments and global issues. Learning is sequenced to build upon prior knowledge, enabling children to make connections and deepen their understanding as they move through the school.

Pupils develop key geographical skills throughout their learning, including map reading, fieldwork, data collection, observation and geographical enquiry. They learn to interpret a range of sources, ask meaningful questions and investigate how people and places are interconnected. Through this approach, children develop as thoughtful geographers who can understand and explain the world around them.

Our local area provides a rich context for learning, and we make use of opportunities for fieldwork and first-hand experiences wherever possible. Children are encouraged to explore their environment, develop a sense of place and understand their role as responsible global citizens.

We believe geography should be engaging, relevant and inspiring. Through the study of different countries, continents and cultures, pupils develop an appreciation of diversity and gain a greater understanding of contemporary global challenges, including sustainability, climate change and environmental stewardship.

Geography is further enriched through our popular Geography Club, led by Mrs Judge and Miss Bennett for pupils in Key Stage 1. Through exciting activities, map work, investigations and exploration of different places around the world, children develop an enthusiasm for geography and a sense of wonder about the wider world.

At St Richard’s, we are ambitious for all learners and are committed to ensuring that every child can succeed. Through high-quality teaching, effective assessment and adaptive practice, pupils develop the knowledge, skills and confidence needed to think and work as young geographers.

By the time they leave St Richard’s, pupils will have a strong understanding of the world around them, an appreciation of different people, places and cultures, and the geographical knowledge and skills needed to continue their learning and contribute positively to the world they share.
