Uniform Information

St Richard's Catholic Primary School Uniform

We invite children to wear summer uniform from the start of the summer term until the October half term but this is a matter of individual choice and all items of uniform may be worn throughout the whole school year.

All items of uniform must be clearly marked with your child’s name, to avoid loss, waste of time and confusion. Any items of lost property are kept in the

lost property box which can be found in the school hall.

Children are not allowed to bring large bags to school as the cloakrooms are not big enough. Baseball caps, hats and sunglasses for summer sun protection can be worn when outside, similarly a warm hat in the winter to protect from the cold.

Hair: Children are not to have extreme or dyed hairstyles in order to be in keeping with our standards and uniform. We expect those with longer hair to keep their hair tied back, in particular for P.E. and Games.

Footwear: Shoes should be black. Boots and trainers are not acceptable. All children will require a pair of trainers for P.E. (only for the Summer Term for reception class). Shoes need to be safe, sturdy and easy for the children to take on and off. No open-toe shoes, heels or slip-ons.

Make up and nail varnish: Children are not permitted to wear makeup or nail varnish at school.

Jewellery: We discourage the children from wearing jewellery in school. This is a safety measure to avoid accidents or the loss of a valuable item. According to West Sussex guidelines, all ear studs and sleepers are to be discouraged and must not be worn for P.E. or Games on the grounds of health and safety. Any parent wishing to have their child’s ears pierced is advised to do this at the start of a holiday period so that they can be removed for school. We ask that children do not wear make-up or nail varnish of any kind.

Headscarves and other religious or cultural symbols inc. jewellery with religious meaning can be worn – please discuss this requirement with the Headteacher directly.

We try to keep the school well ventilated throughout the year so ask that during the colder months children are dressed appropriately with lots of warm layers. Please ensure your child has a warm, waterproof coat in the winter and a lighter waterproof jacket in the summer, wellingtons are also advised in the winter months. All break times are spent outside apart from during extreme weather conditions

All members of staff have the right to decide if a child is not in line with the uniform policy.

If your child is not able to wear the correct uniform, a note must be given to the class teacher informing them.

PE Kit

Children should wear PE kit all day on the days they have PE.

  • St Richard’s logo’d pale blue school t-shirt (not other sports or football tops) available from Game Set and Match
  • Black shorts
  • Optional school sports jumper or normal school jumper
  • P.E. trainers for indoor and outdoor games (no PE shoes needed for reception classes until the  summer term)
  • For the winter: Plain black or navy jogging bottoms or leggings

Outdoor learning and playtimes

We aim to work outside as much as possible and to not have indoor playtimes.  We therefore ask children to make sure they have a waterproof coat in school.  Waterproof trousers and wellies can also be brought in.
