Computing at St Richard’s Catholic Primary School

At St Richard’s Catholic Primary School, we are ambitious for every child to become a confident, capable and responsible user of technology. Our computing curriculum is carefully designed to equip pupils with the knowledge, skills and understanding they need to succeed in an increasingly digital world. We want children not only to use technology effectively, but also to understand how it works, think critically about the digital world and become creative problem-solvers.

Our curriculum is built around the three key strands of Computer Science, Information Technology and Digital Literacy, ensuring progression from Early Years through to Year 6. Learning is carefully sequenced so that pupils build on prior knowledge, revisit important concepts and develop increasingly sophisticated understanding over time. This enables children to know more, remember more and apply their learning confidently across a range of contexts.

Through Computer Science, pupils develop computational thinking by learning about algorithms, programming, debugging and logical reasoning. Children are encouraged to solve problems, identify patterns and think systematically, helping them to develop resilience, creativity and independence.

Through Information Technology, pupils learn how to create, organise, evaluate and present digital content using a range of applications and technologies. They develop the skills needed to communicate, collaborate and work effectively using digital tools.

Digital Literacy is woven throughout our curriculum and is a key priority. Pupils learn how to use technology safely, respectfully and responsibly, understanding how to protect themselves online and navigate the digital world with confidence. Online safety is regularly revisited and embedded across the curriculum, ensuring that children understand both the opportunities and risks associated with technology.

To support learning, pupils have regular access to both Chromebooks and iPads, enabling them to engage with a wide range of digital tools and experiences. Technology is used purposefully across the curriculum to enhance learning, develop digital skills and prepare pupils for the demands of modern life.

Our computing curriculum is inclusive and ambitious for all learners. Through high-quality teaching, responsive assessment and adaptive practice, teachers identify misconceptions, provide appropriate challenge and ensure that every pupil, including those with SEND and disadvantaged pupils, is able to achieve success.

As part of the Bosco Catholic Education Trust, we work collaboratively with colleagues across the Trust to share best practice, develop subject expertise and continually strengthen our computing provision. This ensures that our curriculum remains relevant, engaging and responsive to the ever-changing world of technology.

By the time they leave St Richard’s, pupils will have developed secure computing knowledge, strong problem-solving skills and the confidence to use technology effectively, responsibly and creatively. They will be well prepared for the next stage of their education and equipped to thrive as active participants in the digital world.
