Science at St Richard’s Catholic Primary School

At St Richard’s Catholic Primary School, we are passionate about science and believe that every child should develop a sense of curiosity, wonder and excitement about the world around them. Our ambition is to equip pupils with the knowledge, skills and scientific understanding they need to make sense of the natural and physical world whilst inspiring the next generation of scientists, engineers, healthcare professionals and innovators.

Our science curriculum is carefully sequenced to build knowledge progressively throughout each year and across phases of learning. Through the study of biology, chemistry and physics, pupils develop a secure understanding of key scientific concepts and build upon prior learning, enabling them to know more and remember more over time.

We place scientific enquiry at the heart of learning. Pupils are encouraged to ask questions, make predictions, plan investigations, observe closely, gather and analyse evidence, and draw conclusions using scientific reasoning. Through regular practical experiences, children develop the skills needed to think critically, solve problems and understand how scientific knowledge is developed.

Learning is designed to be engaging, challenging and relevant. Teachers use high-quality explanations, practical investigations and meaningful real-world contexts to help pupils make connections and deepen their understanding. Scientific vocabulary is explicitly taught and revisited so that children can communicate their ideas accurately and confidently.

We are ambitious for all learners and ensure that science is accessible to every child. Through careful assessment and responsive teaching, lessons are adapted to provide both support and challenge, enabling all pupils, including those with SEND and disadvantaged pupils, to achieve success.

Science is celebrated throughout our school. Each year we take part in British Science Week, providing pupils with exciting opportunities to investigate, experiment and work collaboratively through a range of STEM challenges and enrichment activities. These experiences help to inspire a lifelong interest in science and showcase its importance in everyday life.

At St Richard’s, we want our pupils to leave primary school with a secure body of scientific knowledge, strong enquiry skills and a genuine enthusiasm for discovering more about the world around them.
