At St Richard’s Catholic Primary School, British Values are deeply rooted within our Catholic ethos and are an integral part of our mission to develop confident, compassionate and responsible citizens. Through our curriculum, Catholic life, personal development programme and everyday interactions, we teach children to understand, respect and actively promote the values that enable people to live together positively within a diverse and democratic society.
British Values are not taught as a standalone subject. Instead, they are woven throughout every aspect of school life, helping pupils to understand how these principles relate to both their faith and their role within the wider community. We encourage children to live out these values through their actions, relationships and contributions to school life.
Pupils are given regular opportunities to have their voices heard and to contribute to decision-making within the school. Through our School Council, Mini Vinnies, pupil leadership roles, class discussions and pupil voice activities, children learn the importance of participation, representation and listening respectfully to different viewpoints. They understand that everyone has a voice and that decisions can be made fairly and democratically.
Children learn the importance of rules, laws and responsibilities in creating safe, respectful and successful communities. Through our behaviour policy, restorative approaches, safeguarding curriculum and everyday school routines, pupils develop an understanding of why rules exist, the consequences of actions and the importance of making positive choices.
We encourage pupils to develop independence, confidence and resilience. Children are supported to make informed choices, express their ideas respectfully and take responsibility for their own learning and behaviour. Through a safe and nurturing environment, pupils learn how to exercise their freedoms responsibly whilst recognising the rights of others.
Respect lies at the heart of our Catholic mission. Pupils are taught that every person is created in the image and likeness of God and deserves dignity, kindness and compassion. Through positive relationships, collaborative learning and shared worship, children develop respect for themselves, others and the world around them.
As a diverse and inclusive school community, we celebrate the rich range of cultures, backgrounds, faiths and experiences represented within our school. Through Religious Education, collective worship, curriculum learning and special events, pupils develop an understanding of different faiths and beliefs. They learn to value diversity, challenge prejudice and show respect for people whose views, beliefs and lifestyles may differ from their own.
British Values are brought to life through:
At St Richard’s, we are committed to preparing pupils for life in modern Britain. Through our Catholic values, high expectations and inclusive culture, children develop the knowledge, understanding and character needed to become active, respectful and responsible members of society who make a positive contribution to the common good.
